One dead, one injured in Sucker Garden shooting

page1b151PHILIPSBURG--One man died and another was injured after a shooting incident in Sucker Garden on Saturday night.

Police were called to the Patricia Garden Bar, better known as Flanders Bar at 9:26pm, where a man was found dead inside a grey Kia Rio, which was parked on the grounds of a car wash nearby.

The victim was named locally as Rundell Bobb from Guyana, who was described as being of good character, but who was said to have associates who had been in trouble with the law.

A second male was injured in the incident. Police gave this man's initials as A.B. but locals named him as Nino Thewet. Thewet, also known as Nino Brown, was the victim of another shooting outside the Tantra Nightclub earlier this year.

The surviving victim was treated at the scene before being taken to St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment.

Witnesses reported hearing over 20 bullets being discharged from what they believe to be a high calibre automatic weapon. This has not been confirmed by the police, however, a witness on Pondfill Road described looking to the sky upon hearing the shots, expecting to see fireworks.

A large number of police investigators attended the scene, and a forensic investigation was started.

In-depth details of the shooting, along with very graphic photographs of the dead man, appeared on Facebook this weekend.

Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson commented on this unwise and disrespectful behaviour: "The police work closely together with the media to ensure that no damage is done to the police investigation by details published. Certain details being brought out in the open can really damage a case, and potentially put lives at risk. In this case, those individuals severely jeopardised the police investigation by publishing those details online."

"It is also extremely disrespectful and hurtful to the family of the victim that such graphic images were placed online," he added.

The police investigation is ongoing and it is as yet unclear why the two men were shot. The police are asking any members of the public who may be able to provide information, to come forward.
