PHILIPSBURG--Police held two suspicious men in Philipsburg Wednesday for arms possession after a foot chase through "down street."
Police found a gun barrel in one of the suspects' bags.
In custody are L.L. of Guyana, whom police ran down, and E.A.D. of St. Maarten, police said. Officers spotted them in a Toyota Yaris with dark-tinted windows on Long Wall Road about 10:30am and chased them in the patrol car to Radio Shack, before the men got out and tried running.
Police had planned to stop the car for a routine traffic check, but became suspicious when the driver refused to stop. The suspects kept running even after officers fired a warning shot into the air.
"While running away, one of the officers saw that [D.] had an object that looked like a firearm in his hand. These men were ordered to stop. However, [D.] continued running," police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson said in a press statement. "A warning shot was then fired by the officer. However, the suspect succeeded in avoiding his capture."
Police arrested L. on the spot. L. told police he had run because he didn't have documents to live here.
Officers caught up to D. in Philipsburg later. They found a revolver barrel in his bag and then arrested him.
