PHILIPSBURG--Prosecutors assured on Thursday that their office would play fair with the investigations into a hit-and-run traffic accident caused by a prosecutor nearly two weeks ago.
Attorney General in Curaçao Dick Piar sent prosecutor J.B.D. on leave on Monday until authorities rule his guilt or innocence for driving his car into another car in Middle Region and then leaving the scene before police arrived. Police held him for questioning for about five hours the night of the accident.
Prosecutor Rienk Mud assured that his office was not trying to subvert justice in any way. He said he would refrain from further comment until Aruba's prosecutor general decided on D.'s fate.
"We are trying to handle this the best way we can," Mud told The Daily Herald. "It's an awkward situation and we are very much aware, but we want to let justice prevail." Mud said he planned to issue a press statement about the case when it was complete.
