MARIGOT--Officers from Police aux Frontières (PAF) have detained three persons, including a father and son, suspected of renting out lodgings in Sandy Ground described by PAF as "incompatible with human dignity."
As a consequence of immigration controls on July 28, PAF uncovered a series of lodgings in Sandy Ground unfit for human habitation. The lodgings lacked water and electricity, and in some cases had electricity that was poorly installed and dangerous.
A number of children were found living in these premises and one three-and-a-half-year-old child was found to be suffering from a serious skin condition and taken to hospital.
PAF indicated that as many as 31 lodgings are under investigation. However, 10 have already been identified as contravening health regulations and living standards. One building contained ten apartments, of which four were basement apartments underground that had no water, electricity or toilets.
Among the tenants, four were found to be residing illegally in the territory. Tenants were paying rents of between 200 and 350 euros monthly in cash.
PAF further indicated the investigation under way will determine how many tenants have been subjected to this abuse as well as estimating how much profit was generated by the activity.
