ANGUILLA--The residential population figure of Anguilla has been released by Census Officer Rosanna Browne and it is 11,300.
She noted that the pre-census day household visits had allowed this first estimate of the population to be released before the full census results are established.
The residential population is a count of persons resident in Anguilla for at least six months of the year and is termed the "de jure population." It is estimated provisionally that 5,570 are males and 5,730 are females and that 8,130 are adults over 15 years.
The de facto population--those who were staying in Anguilla on census night, May 9--is estimated to be 11,960 people. This figure includes 644 who were staying in hotels or on boats and 152 who were visiting and staying in private homes, but excludes 172 persons who were temporarily absent, but usually reside in Anguilla.
The last census was carried out during the week of February 24-28, 1992. At that time the de jure population count was 9,290 and the de facto population was 9,660.
The population projection based on births, deaths and migration figures was 12,870 in 1999, which is higher than the preliminary count shows. While the final count is expected to be slightly higher than the preliminary count, it is not expected to be as high as the population projection, according to Browne.
The pre-census day household visits also allow household estimates to be released. The total number is provisionally estimated at 3,750 with the average household estimated at three people.
The total number of buildings counted was 5,636 of which 3,834 were occupied residential buildings. There were some 800 vacant or closed residential buildings, some of which were villas.
