Fire destroys two
Orient Bay restaurants

MARIGOT--An early afternoon fire destroyed two restaurants in Orient Bay yesterday in what eyewitnesses described as a case of negligence.

The fire started in back of Tropicafe Restaurant and spread to nearby The Pirate before employees noticed what was happening.

According to eyewitnesses, employees of Tropicafe had started a barbecue fire at the back of the restaurant and left the fire unattended while they continued to serve clients in the front, on the beach.

The unattended fire spread rapidly, first destroying the kitchen of Tropicafe and then that of the nearby Pirate. By the time the fire was noticed it had already destroyed a significant part of the wooden buildings, by which time it was too difficult for employees to put out.

Two fire trucks and six firefighters battled the blaze, but were unable to save any of the equipment in the kitchens.

No one was in The Pirate at the time because the restaurant was closed for vacation. Clients dining at Tropicafe fled the scene when they noticed the fire spreading to the front of the building.
