'The Bachelorette' special
filmed in St. Maarten
PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten/St. Martin is the exclusive location for the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) special update of its hit reality series "The Bachelorette," a spinoff from another show, "The Bachelor."
Airing in November with a prime time slot at the height of the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, the two-hour special was shot on both sides of the island. Bamboo Bernies at Caravanserai Resort and Le Meridien Hotel on the French side, which was closed for the filming, were the primary locations for the show.
"The Bachelorette" offers viewers an update on Pediatric Physical Therapist Trista Rehn's (29) life at present.
Approximately 25 cast members and a crew of 150 arrived on the island Friday and shot the scenes over the weekend. The group departed yesterday.
A number of island residents who visited Bamboo Bernies Saturday night will be part of the completed special. Island personality Chet Euton was lucky to nab a body shot with "The Bachelorette."
The special will afford the island an immense volume of free publicity close to the start of the tourist high season in its key market of the United States. After scouting the island, producers of the special are reportedly considering filming a major motion picture here starting in December.
On the flip side of this story, preceding the arrival of the ABC delegation there was much talk on the island about the tourism authorities' lack of support for the visitors.
However, according to information obtained by The Daily Herald, the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau sent out a number of letters to various entities on the island asking them to provide whatever support they could to the producers. The nature of the special was not mentioned in the correspondence, reportedly because of a confidentiality contract between the bureau and the producers, who are apparently hoping to keep quiet about the location and other details of the special.
