Guest drowns
in resort pool
PHILIPSBURG--Work was temporarily suspended at Divi Little Bay Resort on Saturday morning after employees discovered the body of one of their guests floating in the resort’s swimming pool.
The victim, a young male Canadian, is believed to have drowned while enjoying an early morning swim in the pool.
The victim was pulled out of the water and pronounced dead by Dr. Michael Mercuur, who said he had drowned. The incident occurred around 9:10am. Police spokesman Inspector Johan “Janchi” Leonard has identified the victim as Nithiananthan Sujeevan (20). He was staying in room 2023.
Several police officers and detectives were seen at the resort Saturday questioning persons, trying to determine whether a crime had been committed that resulted in the victim’s death. However, according to Leonard, “Based on information we have received and the doctor’s report, we are treating the case as an unfortunate drowning incident.”
He said that the victim’s body had been confiscated and his next of kin had been informed.
No information was received as to whether the victim had fallen and been unconscious, or if he suffered from some illness that resulted in his drowning. Authorities will likely perform an autopsy.
