Nature Foundation objects
to proposed dolphin park
PHILIPSBURG--The Nature Foundation is objecting to the establishment of the proposed dolphin park on St. Maarten.
“The Nature Foundation makes it publicly known that it does not support the proposed Dolphinarium and/or Dolphin Park in any way,” the organisation stated in a press release Thursday. As such it said it wouldn’t render or approve “under any circumstance” any positive advice to government on this matter.
The Nature Foundation has been opposed to this activity for many years and won’t support St. Maarten becoming involved in a dolphin captivity programme. The foundation, along with many other organisations, entities and individuals, will continue to work hard against this type of industry, the organization stated.
The foundation deplored that the name “marine park” was recently used in the media, an “inaccurate and faulty” association to the only Marine Park of St. Maarten, which is the one established and managed by St. Maarten Nature Foundation.
The Marine Park, established since 1997, serves to protect and conserve marine life within St. Maarten’s coastal waters. It was established along with other marine parks in the Dutch Caribbean. All have been recognised by local as well as regional environmental authorities.
The Nature Foundation urged people not to use the words “marine park” when referring to the “proposed and controversial” Dolphinarium or Dolphin Park, as this could “easily lead to confusion” with the already established Marine Park of St. Maarten.
