Mexican company interested
in building Dolphinarium
PHILIPSBURG--A Mexico-based company is interested in building a dolphinarium in St. Maarten and has already had talks with the Executive Council about its intentions, Environmental Development and Property Management Commissioner Roy Marlin said on Wednesday.
The interested company is Atliantida, a division of Parque Nizuc, which operates in Cancun, Mexico, according to information received by The Daily Herald.
Responding to enquiries from the press whether any company proposed a Dolphinarium and whether business licences and building permits had been issued, Marlin said the company had only outlined its intentions to the council and was guided to the relevant departments with which to hold discussions.
From these discussions, the departments are to submit their advice to the council on the validity of the project.
There has been much "dolphin chatter" on the island for several weeks as animal rights and protection activists got wind of possible plans for a Dolphinarium. The rumoured location for the facility is the land next to Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities belonging to Economic Development Corporation.
