1,150 signatures against
Cupecoy wall submitted
to government
PHILIPSBURG--What started out as a resident voicing his concern via the Internet about the possible destruction of Cupecoy Beach has blossomed into 1,150 signatures from frequent island visitors and beach-goers.
A copy of the petition against the construction of any seawall on the beach was submitted to the Island Government by Philippe Milovidoff on Thursday. He also sent copies to People’s Progressive Alliance (PPA) leader Island Councilwoman Gracita Arrindell, St. Maarten Pride Foundation, Nature Foundation St. Maarten and the local press.
“Because of pressure from regular visitors and beach-goers, a temporary stop of the works was issued some 10 days ago, but we want the wall to be stopped completely,” he stated. In many places in the world where such walls were built, the beaches were not saved, but were subsequently destroyed, he added.
The petition will continue until the proposed wall construction is halted for good, said Milovidoff, who has been a resident on the island for more than 15 years. “It is good to know that the people who come here on vacation really care about the beaches and the island, as they showed this by responding to the petition.”
