Hurricane passes are
ready to be collected

PHILIPSBURG--The distribution of Hurricane Passes for the 2005 hurricane season, which started on June 1, is “on schedule,” according to the Office of Disaster Management.

Some 50 per cent of applicants have already received their passes that allow the bearers to move about at specific times after a storm if a curfew becomes necessary.

According to a release issued by Government Information Services some 230 passes were distributed before the start of the 2005 hurricane season. Some 434 requests were made for the passes in mid-May at the start of the application process.

The hurricane mobility pass system is a measure to maintain public order during emergency situations. The Governor assesses the damage after a disaster has occurred and can impose a curfew if the extent of the damage poses a threat to the safety and security of the community.

The release said about 30 requests were still pending and 170 more passes had been completed and were ready to be collected. The passes can be collected from the Fire Department/Office of Disaster Management at Back Street #56, (upstairs).

Interim Head of GIS Marsha Beauperthuy also said that the media could collect their passes at the GIS Office.
