Government asked to fund
Biological Inventory Project

St. Maarten--The Island Government of St. Maarten has been approached by Nature Foundation St. Maarten for financial assistance for a Biological Inventory Project, as funds from its usual funding source Antillean Co-Financing Office AMFO have been frozen.

The foundation intends to carry out a Site Specific Biological Inventory of St. Maarten’s flora and fauna from June through September.

This Biological Inventory will focus on the Cul de Sac hillsides, Back Bay and the Geneve Bay area, and is designed to provide a more contemporary and detailed report than earlier Biological Inventories of the island.

The flora and fauna on Emilio Wilson Estate will also be documented and will form a separate chapter in the report, according to the foundation. This section will help ascertain the area’s ecological and conservation value and will complement the estate’s archaeological survey carried out by archaeologist Dr. Jay Haviser.

The foundation will use the Biological Inventory to help determine conservation requirements as well as a draft conservation zoning plan for the island. The study will also provide essential information for future Environmental Impact Assessments and similar studies.

Nature Foundation hopes that government will take its request into consideration and looks forward to a response in the near future, as this study is of vital importance for environmentally sustainable development of the island.
