Truck problems cause
large garbage pile-up

St. Maarten--Large blue garbage bins in several areas have been overflowing with uncollected garbage for several days now. The source of the problem has been traced to the trucks of a main contractor experiencing mechanical problems.

Affected areas are Cay Hill, Saunders, Sucker Garden and Pointe Blanche. A resolution and the regularisation of the collection are expected by today, St. Maarten Public Works Commissioner Roy Marlin said.

Residents in the affected areas are fed up with the constant unsightly pile-ups that pose hygiene issues for their neighbourhoods.

For the long term, new routes, collection times and the type of equipment, amongst other items, have been identified and compiled in a report by a consultant from Curaçao.

This document, received by Marlin Thursday, will be used as the basis for the bidding process for the new garbage collection contracts. The bidding process will begin shortly.

Once the contractors are chosen for the various districts based on the criteria, garbage collection is expected to run smoother with fewer pile-ups.
