Police probing reports about
sea pollution at Dawn Beach
PHILIPSBURG--The Authorities are investigating the alleged pollution of the sea at Dawn Beach, Environmental Law expert Prosecutor Paul Mooij confirmed Monday.
The specific allegations being investigated have to do with reports that contractors operating on the Dawn Beach resort project recently pumped waste from a pond into the sea.
They are also investigating reports that the polluting of the sea at Dawn Beach may have been the cause of one child being infected with bacteria, possibly from sewage water.
Mooij confirmed that a complaint had reached his office regarding the alleged pollution and contamination. He said based on investigations so far, it was evident that “some companies are not environmentally-minded and abuse the fact that police and the Environmental Inspection ROB Department are understaffed.
He told The Daily Herald, “I was baffled to hear that after pumping polluted water into the sea, the persons involved “had the courage to dump the rest of the waste in the valley, which again resulted, after the rain, in a tremendous runoff into the sea.”
He said it was apparently too costly for them to bring the waste to the dump or sewage treatment plant.
He said that with such an attitude, “We will for certain destroy the tourist industry on this island.”
