SPCC, Marlin organise
relief fund for St. Peters
and Marigot Hill residents
PHILIPSBURG--Commissioner of Public Works Roy Marlin has decided to lend his support to flood victims in the St. Peters/Marigot Hill community and will be encouraging businesses to donate funds to assist the victims through a special account called the “St. Peters Community Council Relief Fund.”
The council is also organising a cleanup campaign slated for Saturday, in coordination with the Public Works Department which will provide trucks and backhoes to assist in the collection of garbage. Residents are urged to put their garbage outside on Saturday by 7:00am.
“Debris piled outside your yard later on Saturday may not be collected and the cooperation of the community is being requested,” the release stated.
Because of last Saturday’s rainfall, several residents in the area suffered significant material damage and loss and the intention, according to SPCC, is to ensure that those in “dire need are assisted through the fund.”
The account has been established at Windward Islands Bank and the number is 220-83-304. SPCC is encouraging businesses to support a worthy cause and says cheques can be made out to “SPCC Relief Fund.”
The council has also established criteria for consideration for aid and says preference will be given to residents who are unemployed, pensioners and welfare (onderstand) recipients.
The fund will be used primarily for replacement of basic necessities, such as stoves, refrigerators and furniture, and the homes must be concrete structures. Preference will also be given to those who lost items that were not insured.
Relief forms can be picked up at the SPCC office in Rupert I. Maynard Youth Community Centre and board members will also distribute them to residents who are unable to collect the forms.
Once the forms have been returned, SPCC will evaluate the actual findings and a decision on relief assistance will be made.
