Contractors catching up
at new Govt Building

PHILIPSBURG--Short foundation sheet piles for the new Government Administration Building on Pond Island set the project back close to six weeks, but contractors are now racing to get back on schedule for the estimated 2007 completion date.

Speaking at Wednesday’s Executive Council press briefing, Commissioner Louie Laveist, who is overseeing the project financed by RGM Limited of Trinidad and Tobago, said, “The project is along nicely.”

The contractors are working to catch up on lost time by working longer hours and adding Saturday as a work day at the site, which is the former University parking lot. “We are sort of beating back the clock somewhat to catch up with lost time.”

The new multi-million-dollar administration building will house most of government’s now scattered departments under one roof, which will allow for smooth working of the governmental apparatus and better service to the public.

The present administration building on Clem LaBega Square will be remodelled to house the Parliament of County St. Maarten when the status of country within the Dutch Kingdom is achieved by the island.
