AVS launches
own website

PHILIPSBURG--Arts Video Studio (AVS) launched its own Website, which provides news, special features, entertainment and local bulletins online, on Tuesday.

The Website www.newsavs.com was launched at the production studio’s offices at E. Camille Richardson Street #18 on Tuesday afternoon with everyone from the company represented.

The Website was developed by Secure Tech International which was represented at the launch by its managing director Gregory Richardson who explained that the Website had the capability of streaming live events.

According to AVS, it intends to operate a Web service that is user-friendly and easily accessible to the public at large, but especially to the some 500 St. Maarten students studying abroad.

In the past AVS had made some news items accessible online to credit card users, but access was possible only through links to another existing site. Under the new arrangement, the service will be provided free of charge. The much-needed revenue will be generated by selling ads online.

Because of the new arrangement, the AVS management team plans to broadcast local shows and important events on line, worldwide.

Already a two-minute video clip highlighting St. Maarten’s 2006 Grand Carnival Parade and its Jouvert Jump-Up is online for surfers to see. AVS management says it is aware of the implications of having local information instantly viewed worldwide and as such it will endeavour to seek approval before streaming special events outside of its news production.

Already, and without AVS marketing its product, the Website has been recording more than 3,000 hits on a daily basis.

Richardson said such a move by the AVS management team was monumental for the Caribbean. He said the fact that the company could have online polling gave the site an added feature. This has already been tested, with the first question being whether passenger buses should run through Sucker Garden.

The Website is updated daily at 9:00am.
