Westin Resort to reach
highest point next week
DAWN BEACH, St. Maarten--The highest point in the construction of Westin Beach Resort and Spa in Dawn Beach will be reached next week and a St. Maarten flag will be hoisted Tuesday to mark this milestone.
The resort, slated for completion in December, will have 310 hotel rooms and suites, 100 condominiums, a casino, full service European style Hibiscus Spa, restaurants, retail shops, ultra-lounge and nightclubs, amongst other amenities.
The cornerstone for the resort was laid by Columbia Sussex Corporation President William Yung and Commissioner Roy Marlin on November 7, 2005, seven months after the developer indicated interest in redeveloping the hotel property left in ruins by Hurricane Luis in 1995.
The old building and foundations were demolished to make way for the new construction, which was first thought by persons in the community to be a Marriott Resort.
Destruction of a natural pond and mangroves around it and other “environmental incursions” on the property were met with harsh criticism from the environmental community and area residents.
A job fair highlighting career opportunities at Westin Resort for graduating high school students was held in May. Similar job fairs will be held for the unemployed and for returning students in collaboration with the Island Labour Office and the resort in the near future.
