Man sentenced for
mistreating ex-lover
PHILIPSBURG--A 25-year-old St. Maarten resident was jailed Thursday for mistreating and abducting his former girlfriend.
Things went wrong between the two former lovers, who have a child together, after the man found out the woman was in a lesbian relationship. Both seem to be rather ill-tempered and they had violent arguments on a regular basis, sometimes hurting each other in the process.
Curaçao-born Orlando Fernando Thewet was charged with a total of seven counts: three for mistreatment and one each for stalking, threatening, attempted mistreatment with a knife and abduction. All these crimes were allegedly committed between June 9 and July 19.
Prosecutor Paul Mooij said Thewet should not be allowed to be in the vicinity of his ex-girlfriend anymore. He therefore asked Judge Jan Harmen Bosch to impose a prison sentence of 18 months, 12 of which suspended, with two years’ probation and a two-year ban on any contact with his ex-girlfriend.
Judge Bosch considered it proven that Thewet had abducted the woman in a car, and that he had mistreated her on June 9 and on July 18. Thewet was acquitted on the other charges. For these crimes he was convicted and sentenced to serve 12 month in prison, 10 months of which were suspended, with two years’ probation and a two-year ban on establishing any contact with his former girlfriend.
