Roy stays with DP, but
makes position available

PHILIPSBURG--Although Democratic Party (DP) Commissioner Roy Marlin has not resigned from his post, he has made his position available should this be requested by the party.

Speaking about speculations that his resignation had been rejected by DP leader Sarah Wescot-Williams during a party meeting Tuesday, Marlin said he simply had indicated that “if need be or anyone is not happy with his functioning” his position as commissioner would be available.

Marlin stated at Wednesday’s Executive Council press briefing that he would make no more comments on this matter. “The issue for me has been put to rest.”

Asked about the situation, Wescot-Williams said she simply didn’t think Marlin’s letter, which she did not read or discuss, had any relevance to the meeting which dealt with several issues, including the appointment of Sector Directors.

Whether it was a letter of resignation only Marlin can confirm, she added during the question and answer segment of the press briefing. However, she did confirm that she had torn up the unread letter in the meeting.

Talk about a rift in the governing party has spread like wildfire through the community since Sunday when news broke about the resignation of DP member Claudius Buncamper, husband of Island Councilwoman/Parliamentarian Maria Buncamper-Molanus, from the party.

The reason for his resignation, according to some sources, was Buncamper’s fury about not being appointed Sector Director of the Environmental Development and Property Management ROB. Buncamper is head of the department’s Maintenance Section.

Buncamper-Molanus and her husband have denied that there has been any upheaval in the party caused by the appointment of interim head Joseph Dollison.

Dollison, who is also a DP member, was appointed to the position by an Executive Council decision recently. Asked separately about Dollison’s appointment, Marlin said he was best qualified and suited to the job. The selection was made via an application process.
