UTS launches BlackBerry
technology tonight

PHILIPSBURG--If e-mail has become a vital part of your business or personal life, then tonight’s launch of BlackBerry, a handheld Personal Digital Assistance (PDA) device, by United Telecommunications Services (UTS) will be music to your ears.

A cross section of the community has been invited to a launching ceremony for BlackBerry at a party at Port de Plaisance tonight.

The handheld PDA device was engineered for e-mail. Most models come with built-in mobile phones, making them ideal for users who want to access their e-mail from somewhere besides the comfort of a desk and chair.

UTS General Manager for the Eastern Caribbean Glen Carty is the only one scheduled to speak at tonight’s ceremony. The event will feature a PowerPoint presentation of the BlackBerry service that Carty promises “won’t be technical and boring.”

Information tables will be set up for guests to read more about the service and get demonstrations. Carty said the company would start to market the product with visits to businesses on Monday.

He said UTS had been testing BlackBerry among its employees for sometime. He is confident that the product being offered will be of optimal quality, because it will be regulated “under the tight restrictions and regulations” of Canada-based firm Research In Motion (RIM), which is also the maker of BlackBerry.

Potential consumers can look out for specials that will be held for the new product that Carty wanted to keep under wraps for now.

BlackBerry offers consumers versatility and convenience. The device is able to access the Internet, retrieve and send e-mails, download and do just about anything a person can do from a desktop computer.

Manufacturers of the information dynamo called it the “productivity tool.” They claim that while most handheld devices force you to retrieve your messages when you happen to be in a coverage area, BlackBerry e-mail messages are “pushed” to your device the instant they are received in your inbox. Clients can view them even when they are out of cellular range. “It’s great for everyone,” Carty said.
