Cornerstone laid
for fish market
SIMPSON BAY/St. Maarten--“A small but symbolic ceremony,” was how Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams described the laying of the cornerstone at the entrance building of the Simpson Bay fish market Wednesday.
This project, more than 10 years in the making, faced many obstacles in its financing, planning and other aspects. Despite these setbacks, Wescot-Williams actively pursued it for the benefit of the fishing community.
Head of New Projects Development and Planning Kurt Ruan said the market, slated for completion at the end of November/early December, will give the community a place not only to get their fish, but to look back and reminisce about Simpson Bay as a fishing village.
The market will include some 17 market stalls, six restaurants, four office spaces and a bar overlooking the lagoon. There will also be a covered area for recreational and other activities.
Witnessing the cornerstone laying were Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards, other Government officials and representatives of contractor Windward Roads Infrastructure.
