Marriott Renaissance
resort for Gibbs Bay

PHILIPSBURG/St. Maarten--St. Maarten may soon have another brand name resort. This time, a Marriott Renaissance Constellation Resort is being considered for the Gibbs Bay/Red Pond Area.

Developers are looking closely at the progress of Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort, Spa and Residences and after drafting plans of their own, Environmental Development and Property Management Commissioner Roy Marlin said Wednesday.

Government has installed a committee to work along with the developers to ensure the project fits within set guidelines for building, environment and tourism growth. On the committee are Projects and Programme Bureau Head Louis Brown, St. Maarten Tourist Bureau Director Regina LaBega, Sector Head of Economic Affairs and Tourism Miguel De Weever and Sector Head of Public Works Joseph Dollison.

The Constellation Resort project is already being advertised on the Internet at http://www.constellationresort.com , although it still must obtain a planning permit.

According to information from the Website, the resort’s Greek Seaside Hill Town style master plan consists of 63 two- and three-bedroom terraced whitewashed luxury duplex villas with private swimming pools and hot tub spas, plus 160 luxury duplex one- and two-bedroom villas, each with a terraced garden and swimming pool. They will be offered for condominium ownership and planned within 7 neighbourhoods.

Also planned are 100 one- and two-bedroom luxurious hotel guest suites, planned around the hotel’s event plaza with its “lazy river” lounging pool, Grecian Spa, nightclub, casino, eight international cuisine specialty restaurants, tennis courts, Kid’s Club, Teen Club, ballroom, meeting and event facilities set within acres of lush tropical gardens, fountains and Greek-themed sculptures.

The resort’s signature Constellation telescope observation tower is part of the development. The telescope observation tower is programmed to broadcast views of the night sky to each of the in-suite large screen plasma TVs throughout the property, together with commentary from the Constellation Resort’s on-site astronomer.
