Baby dies after falling from
mother’s arms during fight
CAY HILL--A two-month-old baby who allegedly slipped from his mother’s arm while she was fighting with his father landed on his head and later died on Sunday, September 17.
Police are investigating whether the parents abused or mistreated the child. If the parents are found guilty, they could face jail time.
Police spokesman Chief Inspector Humphrey “Boyd” Giterson told The Daily Herald on Sunday that the police dispatch centre had directed detectives to SMMC on Sunday. There they were told that an infant had been taken to the emergency room by his parents and showed no signs of life.
At first it was thought the child had died as a result of respiratory problems, but the doctor on duty called the police when he became suspicious of foul play after finding a cut on the baby’s head. He told police the baby had been dead on arrival at the hospital.
Police learnt that the child’s mother and father (both 26) from the Dominican Republic had fought while the mother held their two-month-old baby boy in one arm. They lived at Catapult Drive #20, off L.B. Scott Road.
Police are investigating reports that the baby had fallen from the mother’s arm during the struggle between the parents and landed head first on the concrete floor. The parents reportedly felt relieved that the child had survived the fall and decided not to take him to a doctor. Later, when the child became ill, they became concerned and rushed him to the hospital.
Giterson said an autopsy would be done on the child’s body and, based on the pathologist’s report, one or both parents could be arrested.
