Dancers in awe
with Alvin Ailey

PHILIPSBURG--The nine dancers who formed part of the Loud ’N Lovin’ It team in New York were left in awe after their visit to the prestigious Alvin Ailey Dance Centre in New York City on Tuesday.

The visit was part of the weeklong New York trip for the winners of Talent Showdown 2006. Some 23 people made up the St. Maarten delegation.

The students were given a complete tour of Alvin Ailey Dance Centre and the opportunity to observe two classes. For the dancers in particular, the visit was awe-inspiring.

A press release from the organisers quoted one of the dancers as saying, “For many of us, attending Alvin Ailey is only a dream. Some of us really want to try, but some know that it probably won’t happen. But the opportunity to see professionals at work was incredible.”

“The discipline that they put into their dancing is what makes them so good. When you look at them you think they are robots. But it’s just that they work hard at what they do and always put out 100 per cent. The building and all of the studios and amenities for the dancers are also very impressive,” another dancer was quoted as saying.

Assistant Coordinator of the trip Roosje Rommy, a dancer herself, stressed that the fact that the dancers on the trip recognised how much work went into professional dancing showed that the Loud ’N Lovin’ It group had accomplished one of its goals: “To expose our young artistes to their art forms on a higher level.”

“A lot of times we sit in St. Maarten and think that we have all the discipline in the world as dancers. But in order to really appreciate and understand the dedication that it takes, you have to witness it firsthand. And they did and they have a whole new outlook,” Rommy said.

She said Loud ’N Lovin’ It would organise the visit next year in such a way that the winning dance group would be allowed to take classes at Ailey. The group received a special invitation from its hosts and plans to act on it next year.

The students on the trip have also visited the MTV studios and other sites around New York.
