Robbers beat up and
throw gasoline on man
PHILIPSBURG--While detectives on St. Maarten scramble through a crime scene to find the three masterminds behind the armed robbery and cruel beating of a Pointe Blanche resident whom they robbed on Monday around 10:30pm, the victim E.G. remains hospitalised with multiple wounds and significant blood loss.
Although no evidence has surfaced to confirm this, many are already concerned that his attack was the work of a disgruntled employee or business associate. The robbers were looking for jewellery and/or money, which the owners of the house never keep around.
Police spokesman Chief Inspector Humphrey “Boyd” Giterson told The Daily Herald Tuesday that the victim had been alone at his home Monte Vista in Pointe Blanche when he was suddenly attacked by three armed men and beaten nearly to death. At that point the attackers covered his body with gasoline.
Realising that the bandits meant to set him on fire, he managed to free himself and jumped into the swimming pool on the premises. The attackers then resorted to throwing flowerpots at him, many of which struck him on the head.
When the victim realised he was losing consciousness, he climbed out of the swimming pool to avoid drowning. He was then tied up with electrical wire and the robbers continued to beat him. He was also struck several times with the butt of a gun.
He then feigned unconsciousness, which caused the attackers to stop beating him, and they proceeded to search the house. In an unguarded moment, the victim managed to partially free himself and ran to his neighbour’s house. Police were called from there.
Giterson said one of the attackers appeared to have gained entrance through a bathroom window. Once inside, he opened the main door to the building, allowing the others to enter.
The victim described the suspects as being “relatively young.” The full extent of the injuries sustained by the victim is not yet known. He reportedly was still hospitalised Tuesday night.
