One way traffic on Cannegieter
and E.C. Richardson Streets
PHILIPSBURG--To decrease congestion in Philipsburg and improve parking, Cannegieter and E.C. Richardson Streets will become one-way streets next year. The changing of the traffic flow pattern is a part of the complete upgrading of the area.
Cannegieter Street will be one way from the Windward Islands Bank main branch for traffic heading East to Super Plaza and Philipsburg Jubilee Library. E.C. Richardson Street will be a one way street for vehicles heading West from People’s Supermarket to the police station.
These sections of both streets will be repaved and shouldered by sidewalks. All houses and businesses will be connected to the main sewage line and the drainage, which has been a constant problem for years, will be remedied, New Projects Development and Planning Head Kurt Ruan told The Daily Herald.
Mirroring the palm tree-lined Front Street, greenery will be a major part of this upgrading project, as trees will be planted along the streets. All utility lines will be placed underground and streetlights installed.
Cross-parking spaces will be created on both sides of the streets. Residents and businesses will have designated parking spaces and the remaining lots will be made available for public use.
Project funding is expected from the Netherlands Antilles Development Foundation implementation organisation USONA as an allocation for the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities shares buyback money.
The project dossier, including drawings and bidding documents, is being finalised and will be submitted for funding soon. Once funding is approved, the upgrading work will start early next year and should take about eight months.
This project is being overseen by Economic Affairs and Tourism Commissioner Theo Heyliger and fits into the overall beautification and rejuvenation of Philipsburg and its environs that started with the construction of the Great Bay Beach promenade (boardwalk) and upgrading of Front Street.
The rejuvenation project is partly based on the Almere Development Vision for Philipsburg and the Great Bay Area compiled in 2003.
Heyliger, Ruan and other representatives of the Public Works Department met with area residents last week to explain the project and gather ideas and input. (Alita Singh)
