Lots of colours as schools
celebrate national day

SOUTH REWARD--The colours of the St. Maarten flag and traditional wear were abounding on Friday as many elementary schools celebrated St. Martin/St. Maarten Day.

At some schools, students left their school uniforms home and were allowed to wear the colours of the St. Maarten flag. Even some teachers swapped their office wear to dress in red, white and blue. At other schools, students still wore their school uniforms but engaged in special activities in observance of the national day, which was officially observed on Saturday, November 11.

Prins Willem Alexander School in St. Peters stuck to tradition and held their annual show. Both the kindergarten and primary sections of the school took part in a programme in observance of the day. Some students were dressed in the colours of the St. Maarten flag and others in traditional clothing. The programme saw students doing skits, singing songs and reciting poems all relating in one way or another to St. Maarten and its history or future.

It was red white and blue at St. Dominic Primary as students represented the flag in their clothing. The celebrations at St. Dominic started with students singing the St. Maarten Song while the flag was hoisted. There were also several performances.

Things were quiet at Prins Willem Alexander School on Friday, but not on Thursday when the school held its celebrations. The school was transformed into an exhibition site. One classroom had coconuts on display and all the items that can be made from it, including a line of eateries.

Another classroom had locally grown fruits on display and the various jams and juices that could be made from them. In the front of the school, students were shown how to mix the dough and fry journey cakes, which they enjoyed.

There was no official celebration at Sr. Magda School but some individual teachers did activities with their students to celebrate the day. When The Daily Herald visited Sr. Magda Friday, some students were proud to show off the St. Maarten Flags they had just completed.

Many other schools had some form of activity or show in observance of St. Martin/St. Maarten Day.
