International Day of
Tolerance today

PHILIPSBURG--Creating a more tolerant society was one of the messages Cultural Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist sent out in a message to mark International Day of Tolerance being observed today, Thursday, November 16.

In a press release issued through Government Information Services (GIS), Laveist said St. Maarten has no place for persons who promote intolerance. He calls on everyone to promote and protect human rights in order to overcome those bent on promoting prejudices and polarizing society.

“I am very concerned with global trends in the rise of intolerance, extremism and racism,” the Commissioner said. “Our island nation is a multicultural society which makes us rich due to this diversity. Each and everyone who has made St. Maarten their home must strive to uphold the principles of tolerance, pluralism and mutual respect for a peaceful coexistence. Those who are not able to abide by the aforementioned have no place in our homeland.”

The release said United Nations reports show a rise in xenophobic immigration policies, racist political platforms and violence, and the serious nature of the defamation of religious, anti-Semitism, “Christianophobia,” and particularly “Islamophobia.”
