Insel Air wants
to start Dec 27
PHILIPSBURG--Insel Air plans to start flying to St. Maarten from Curaçao on December 27, Director Edward Heereveen announced on Wednesday.
The airline is waiting for the necessary permit to fly in an MD-83 aircraft from France. The aircraft, belonging to Air Adriatic of Croatia, has successfully passed the comprehensive C-check and after a test flight it will fly over from France, probably this weekend.
The MD-83 is a larger aircraft that can hold 167 passengers. It has lots of cargo space and Heereveen said the airline had already received several inquiries to transport cargo. Cargo is limited on the airline Dutch Antilles Express (DAE) which currently flies the Curaçao-St. Maarten route.
Insel Air will start with four flights per week, but this number will increase as the demand grows.
Insel Air will work closely with its partner Windward Islands Airways International Winair. Heereveen said Winair was a potential partner as St. Maarten’s airline. He said Winair would also play an even more important role in maintaining the route between the two islands when St. Maarten became a country. “Winair, just like us, is a small company and together we can grow strong,” he said.
The inaugural flight on December 27 will bring several invited guests and a number of members of the general public who will have the chance to fly along for free. Persons in St. Maarten interested in flying on the inaugural flight can also apply via
