Resort blocks key road, police
intervene, containers removed
DAWN BEACH--Angry truck drivers could not make deliveries along Oyster Pond Road for several hours Thursday, as two forty-foot containers in the vicinity of the recently opened five-star Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort were blocking the road. The containers were removed around 3:35pm.
The containers reportedly were placed by the resort management, which claimed ownership of the roadway. When no clear indication of ownership could be established, police ordered the removal of the containers, clearing the roadway for traffic once again, police spokesman Inspector Johan “Janchi” Leonard said.
Attempts by this newspaper to reach Westin management to find out more about the situation were futile.
Oyster Pond Road is the only access to Dawn Beach, Red Pond, Tamarind Hill and other neighbourhoods. The road in the vicinity of Defiance Hotel is too steep and narrow for heavy equipment to travel on, so this type of traffic can only reach these neighbourhoods via the road that runs past Oyster Bay Beach Resort.
