Parliament ought to be
able to oust its president

WILLEMSTAD--Parliament must be able to order a president of Parliament to step down if a majority in Parliament no longer trusts him or her. “If Parliament can send a Minister home why can’t it order the president to step down?” PAR Member of Parliament Mike Willem stated in a press release.

Willem concludes that values and political ethics have changed over the years. If in the past a politician who was sentenced by court automatically retired it has become normal that convicted politicians keep their seats in Parliament, Willem said.

According to Willem, a president of Parliament refusing to step down although a majority in Parliament doesn’t support him is also a demonstration of deteriorating political values. He stated that although it was not stated in the constitution that a president of Parliament could be ordered to step down, it also wasn’t stated that this couldn’t be done.

“The fact it’s not written that the president of parliament can be ordered to step down doesn’t mean that it can’t be done, Willem said.

In his opinion a resolution of distrust in the president of Parliament which has the support of a majority in Parliament should be the legal basis for the Governor to demand that the president of parliament resign.
