Win-win agreement reached in
Westin/Dawn Beach Road issue

PHILIPSBURG--The matter of the Dawn Beach Road blockage by Westin Resort, which claims ownership of the road, may have been resolved following a three-hour meeting with ROB Director Joseph E. Dollison, head of New Project Development and Planning for the Public Works Department Kurt Ruan and the management of Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort, Spa and Residences.

Dollison said the parties had come to a win-win agreement on the road issue, but he could not disclose the details before government had been informed.

He said that while he was convinced that the matter had been practically resolved, the details of the discussions during the meeting Wednesday would have to be discussed first with Government and with the property owners.

He said, “I believe I have done what I can do and have resolved the problem from a civil servant’s standpoint. It is now a matter that has to be ratified by government and agreed with the property owners.”

Meanwhile, the roadblock remains on Dawn Beach Road, much to the dismay of the Dawn Beach and Tamarind Hill Estate residents who have filed an official complaint with the local Fire Department requesting that it instruct the hotel to allow clear access to the areas by heavy equipment and emergency vehicles.

They claimed that the resort had put a container on the existing road and created a bypass that did not allow heavy equipment vehicles to pass.

Dollison said he had seen the bypass road and the problem of heavy equipment and vehicles not being able to pass had been resolved, at least for the moment.
