No more losses for
UTS, says director
New team appointed ~
COLE BAY--Announcing that 2007 will be a year of change for United Telecommunications Services (UTS), recently-appointed Corporate Director Paul de Geus says a new team has been put in place to function at the corporate level to help stabilise the company and steer it out of losses.
“There will be no more losses at UTS,” De Geus said during UTS St. Maarten’s New Year’s dinner at Port de Plaisance on Saturday evening. “During 2007 we will strengthen the foundation on which UTS is built and we will serve our clients like we have never done before. We will also transform UTS into a next-generation telecom operator.
“We will rethink and restructure our business in such a way that we are going to be effective and efficient and we will train our people to work with new technology and development in the market,” he said, echoing sentiments expressed by UTS General Manager for the Eastern Caribbean Glen Carty.
The new team tasked with the responsibility to transform the company comprises Human Resource Officer Setley Lourens; Danny Macaya, who will function in Technology; Lyrio Gomes, who will operate in International Development and will be the one to communicate with other UTS arms; and Ann Marie van der Horst, who will take up the helm in the area of Finance.
One person will be brought in from Europe to function in the capacity of commercial affairs. De Guis said too that the union SITCOM had endorsed management’s plan with the signing of an agreement at the beginning of this year.
Expressing his satisfaction with the growth of UTS’ operations in St. Maarten, De Geus said clients could look forward to the growth of UTS in French St. Martin and the strengthening of the St. Kitts and St. Barths operations. He also mentioned penetrating the Suriname market as a goal for this year. “2007 will be a year of change for UTS,” said De Geus.
UTS will also be introducing new billing and customer care systems.
Carty said the past year had been challenging for the telecommunications provider, especially at the corporate level, and there had been “many changes and many ups and downs, but we made it to 2007.” He said the goals set for last year had been met and the figures on the revenue end showed a positive result.
With the new “captain of the ship” in place, Carty said, referring to De Geus, efforts will be made to change the management of UTS’ operations in St. Kitts to make it “work.”
He said that while the company’s main theme this year was focusing solely on its customers, its eyes would remain open to any new market opportunities that might arise.
A SITCOM representative was also on hand to give brief remarks.
