Marlin forecasts
‘licks’ for the DP

Says all NA dignitaries will run

PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) will give the Democratic Party licks again in the April 20 Island Council elections, as it did during the 2006 parliamentary elections, NA leader William Marlin said Sunday.

He also announced that National Alliance would shoot for all 11 seats and that, contrary to all speculations, the NA State Secretary and all the NA Island Council Members would run in the upcoming elections, which he called “crucial.”

Marlin: “St. Maarten decided seven years ago to leave the Netherlands Antilles. The proverbial constitutional train got moving after National Alliance joined government in 2004 and not only St. Maarten, but also the other islands decided to leave Antilles.”

He also said that an agreement about the financial arrangement had been signed just a few days ago following the November 2, 2006, accord. This financial agreement, officially called a transition accord, will be debated today in the Island Council.

In the transition accord it is also stated that St. Maarten will become a country on December 15, 2008. Therefore, Marlin said, the next elected Island Government has to see to it that the proper structure for country St. Maarten, different institutions such as a Social Security Bank SVB and pension fund, and the civil services have to be in place.

He added that combined with the number of Island and Central Government civil servants already working, more expertise was needed to help move St. Maarten forward.
