Insel Air to D.R. and
Haiti via St. Maarten

AIRPORT--Insel Air has introduced return flights to both the Dominican Republic and Haiti from St. Maarten.

The flights to Santo Domingo will be every Thursday and Sunday starting this week, while the weekly service to Port au Prince is every Tuesday.

The MD-83 comes into St. Maarten and then continues to the other destination, before returning to Curaçao.

The Curaçao airline is currently also flying to Aruba and Bonaire, Punto Fijo and Valencia in Venezuela, as well as Paramaribo.

Concerning the latter, Antillean Transport Minister Omayra Leeflang just returned from Suriname with the news that Insel Air and SLM Suriname Airways, which work together, have been given the space to add a flight to their current schedule between Curaçao and Paramaribo.

Dutch Antilles Express (DAE), which has also requested to fly the route with its Fokker jet, will have to wait till January, 2008, she said, adding that “the current airlines must get the chance to establish themselves in the market.”

DAE meanwhile has sought legal advice on its decision to sell tickets for the return flight between Curaçao and St. Maarten both ways for NAf. 200. While Insel Air complained and the Aviation Department ordered DAE to stop, the airline said it is not flying below cost and will maintain this introductory price for its new jet service on the route.
