Jacobs launched as
new NA candidate
PHILIPSBURG--Vernon “Jakes” Jacobs was officially launched as a new candidate on the National Alliance (NA) Slate contending for the Island Council elections of April 20. “Jakes has what it takes,” is his slogan.
Jacobs was a former employee of the Mullet Bay Resort, in the era when the resort educated and trained locals and made them professionals in their work. He currently owns and operates his own business, NA leader William Marlin said when introducing the new candidate.
“I’m a son of the soil and I have the know-how to work and sacrifice for Country St. Maarten. As St. Maarten will become a country within the Dutch Kingdom, we need all hands on deck for it to achieve its goals in the many areas that St. Maarten has been encountering problems,” Jacobs said.
He spoke about managing government and not running government “because when you run government you run into the ground. Government is a business. It’s the people’s business. When you are appointed or elected to take on the challenge to run their business it’s a serious thing you are faced with.”
Jacobs believes it’s time to create a level playing field to ensure that people of St. Maarten have meaningful participation in the economic development of the island. “We have all kinds of investors coming to St. Maarten. Millions and millions of dollars, but the sad state of affairs is that St. Maarten is getting nothing out of it. Local and Caribbean people are often neglected in this process.”
He continued: “We have to start putting our people in place…This is our country and we have to live and survive in our country. I’m extremely confident the National Alliance is able to lead St. Maarten into the new status and manage it accordingly.”
