PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten had a total population of 50,334 inhabitants in 2006, according to statistical information made available from the records of the Census Office.
On December 31, 2006, the population consisted of 25,456 males and 24,878 females. In 2005, St. Maarten had a population of 48,661 inhabitants.
The majority of St. Maarten’s population – 26,808 persons – have the Dutch nationality.
No less than 101 nationalities are represented among the official residents of St. Maarten; most of them stemming from Haiti (5,522), the Dominican Republic (5,233), Dominica (2,518), Jamaica (2,235), and India (1,860).
Thirteen persons were registered at the Census Office with their nationality marked as “unknown,” while two persons are stateless.
It was stated that 570 newborns had been were registered in 2006, while 155 deaths were mourned.
There were 315 marriages in 2006, considerably more than the divorces pronounced (61). Acknowledgements registered totalled 278.
