NA is not at war with any party,
Marlin working on seven seats
PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) will not engage in a war with any political party, said NA leader William Marlin Wednesday evening when introducing the full NA slate for the April 20 Island Council election, including the eight new candidates already introduced individually during past weeks.
“As we prepare for the Island Council Election it was sad to read in the newspapers and find out that the only mission seemingly the Democratic Party (DP) has is to come and fight the NA. They want war,” Marlin said.
However, NA is not at war with DP, according to Marlin. “We are the soldiers for the people of St. Maarten. We are out there to fight their battle. Their battle in preparing St. Maarten for country status.”
The NA slogan for the election is “A new beginning.” This new beginning, according to Marlin, will make education meaningful and accessible to the children, housing a reality and affordable, clear up congested roads and stop reckless building without proper planning and regard for the environment.
He said this election was important because this Island Council would sit for only one year and a transition government would be put in place to prepare the island for a new status. He believes the time for proper preparation for this new status is running out.
“The DP has been in power during the last seven years since the referendum, but it has not done the preparatory work necessary. Today at the last minutes the Government is spending thousands and thousand of dollars on things we should have known years ago.”
And, contending that the NA is ready for the challenge, Marlin continued: “After the DP lost the elections in 2006 the party said immediately after the election that the DP will have to give the government back to the people. Until now they have done nothing to give the government back to the people. That’s why we are not fighting the DP. We are taking the Government from them to give it back to the people.”
Marlin said the developments in St. Maarten were destroying the environment and were not in the interest for the people. “What sense does it make to create more and more so-called job opportunities while when people go to find work they find out Government has been attracting five-star businesses but they are paying five-cent wages. We cannot continue this way.”
Regarding how many seats the party would obtain after the election, Marlin said that based on the results of the 2006 parliamentary election, that NA already had six seats and was working on the seventh.
Marlin named the following 19 persons last night as the candidates for the NA in the April 20 Island Council election:
