Six parties expected
to submit their lists

PHILIPSBURG--Today is nomination day and six political parties are expected to submit lists of candidates to participate in the April 20 Island Council elections. The lists must be submitted to the chairman of the Main Voting Bureau situated in Dr. A.C. Wathey Legislative Hall in the Government Administration Building.

A fee of NAf. 1,000 is charged for each list. The parties that are already represented in the Island Council are exempted from payment.

People’s Progressive Alliance (PPA), National Alliance (NA), Democratic Party (DP), National Democratic Party (NDP) and

Democratic Labour Party (DLP) have confirmed to The Daily Herald that they will submit their lists of candidates. Harold Jack and Sam Hazel have also announced they will be submitting a list, but The Daily Herald was unable to receive confirmation from them.

PPA and NDP are expected to submit their lists in the morning hours.

PPA will be submitting a list of 18 candidates while DLP is to submit a list of four candidates.

NDP will nominate its leader Theophilus F. Priest as an independent political candidate on the Freedom Slate at 2:00pm.

The DP candidates are scheduled to march from John Larmonie Centre on Long Wall Road via Front Street to the Main Voting Bureau.

The NA candidates will depart from the party’s headquarters in Back Street at 2:30pm and march through Cannegieter Street to the Main Voting Bureau, being most probably the last party to submit its list.

In accordance with the Voters Ordinance on Island Council Elections St. Maarten, the supporting of the lists of candidates is from Monday, March 5, until Friday, March 9, from 9:00am to 8:30pm. The supporting of the lists takes place at the Census Office.

Each new list must be supported by 171 voters (one per cent of the total votes cast, 17,159, in the last elections for the Island Council). The lists of existing political parties that have already obtained seats in the Island Council are exempted from this requirement.
