Construction to start on second
half of Soualiga roundabout
PHILIPSBURG--Construction work for the Soualiga Boulevard roundabout is near completion and the contractors have announced that construction of the second half of the roundabout will commence today, Friday.
In an effort to accommodate this phase of the construction Kurt Ruan of ROB in the Public Works Department and Head of the Traffic Department Chief Inspector Hildo Martina announced that there would be some changes in traffic routing, starting on Saturday.
Traffic moving along Walter Nisbeth Road will flow in both directions around the completed portion of the roundabout near the Philipsburg police station as of Saturday morning, while the construction work will be in progress for completion of the second portion.
The remainder of Soualiga Road leading to University of St. Martin and the Census Office will remain blocked until the final stage of the paving is completed. Ruan said that road would be completed in time for this year’s Carnival celebration, which starts in April.
Martina said that as a consequence of the changes, the road between the Post Office and the United Telecommunication Service UTS building would become two-way, to accommodate traffic flowing from and to Cannegieter Street.
In addition, it is imperative, according to Martina and Ruan, that motorists respect the temporary bus stops that have been put in place for passenger buses.
Motorists found parking in these designated bus stops will be fined and their vehicles will be towed away at their own expense.
