Garbage worker killed
as car crashes into truck

PHILIPSBURG--Authorities have confirmed the death of a man whose identity has only been given as M.P. (52) of Haitian descent, following a traffic accident on Union Road in Cole Bay around 4:00am Monday.

Police Inspector Ricardo Henson said more details regarding the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident could not be given at this stage of the investigation.

According to reports, G.L., a journalist with a local newspaper who was driving the vehicle that crashed into the back of a garbage truck owned by Bunchie’s Trucking, had been questioned at Emerald Funeral Home where the victim’s body had been transported from St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) and later at the police station.

G.L. was reportedly travelling from Port de Plaisance towards Cole Bay while the garbage truck was parked on the roadside. M.P. and others were collecting garbage to throw into the truck when for unknown reasons the white Hyundai Excel with licence plate 4233ZZ971 driven by G.L. slammed into it, crushing M.P. between the vehicles.

The victim was first transported to SMMC in critical condition. He later died at the hospital and was transferred to the morgue.
