NA, DP accuse each other of
launching personal attacks

PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) leader William Marlin accused the Democratic Party (DP) Sunday of violating the code of conduct drawn up by the St. Maarten/Saint Martin Christian Council and the St. Maarten United Ministerial Foundation for a free and fair election on April 20.
Marlin’s accusation, which was made on PJD2 radio Sunday morning, has been rejected by DP leader Sarah Wescot-Williams.
Marlin, referring to comments made by DP candidates about the NA and its election campaign during the DP’s first public meeting for the April 20 election campaign in Sucker Garden last Friday night, said he had “never heard so much junk and lies” in his life.
The NA leader said he had heard fragments of the meeting on the radio and labelled the allegations made by DP candidates “slander.”
He said while the DP had been damaging people’s names by launching personal attacks against them, the NA would never launch such attacks.
He said he had seen business people of St. Maarten personally hanging up DP campaign material, but he would not attack them on that because it was their right to decide to participate in the political campaigns.
The DP’s behaviour, he added, showed the frustration of the party regarding the upcoming election.
Reacting to Marlin’s comment, DP leader Sarah Wescot-Williams told The Daily Herald that she would not go into a “tit for tat” with Marlin because that would be in violation of the code of conduct which she said the NA still hadn’t come out and publicly endorsed.
Regarding the allegations about personal attacks being levelled by the DP against the NA, Wescot-Williams said that from the DP’s perspective things looked the other way around, with the NA attacking the DP candidates
“It’s obvious that since the NA started announcing their candidates for the elections, they had been attacking DP members. It’s been all over the papers, so let the record show that,” Wescot-Williams said.
