Sidewalks on Back Street,
completion date April 17
PHILIPSBURG--Walking on Back Street from Plaza Olivia to Angelo’s Boutique is getting a bit less sandy and dusty with the paving of the new raised sidewalks as part of the beautification works.
All utility cables and sewage pipes have been placed underground. The work is going smoothly after setbacks with a high level of groundwater and the utilities companies having to adjust their plans for the cables, Head of New Projects Development and Planning Kurt Ruan told The Daily Herald Tuesday.
The completion date for the paving and reopening of the street is April 17, in time for the busy Carnival season. However, finishing touches such as the installation of streetlights, placement of benches and street-scaping will continue after the street is opened.
Provisions have been made in this first phase of the project for the existing bus stops. Some 25 parking spots for residents and handicapped persons are designated along the street. Several drop-off zones are also in the plans for business to off-load goods. There are two fire hydrants on this section of the road.
The Back Street beautification project was initiated by Commissioner Theo Heyliger. Project contractor is Windward Roads Infrastructure and project supervisor is Lievense.
Meanwhile, phase II of the parking lot on W.J.A. Nisbeth Road is almost completed. The entrance to the lot will be finished once the Soualiga Road upgrade is completed. The temporary road used to access Pond Island while Soualiga Road is being worked on is right at the entrance of the parking lot.
