Soualiga Patrol holds seven
for illegal sale of timeshare
PHILIPSBURG/St. Maarten--Seven timeshare sellers who had been warned to discontinue their “illegal sale of timeshare on Front Street” were arrested by officers of the Soualiga Patrol Team on March 22.
The suspects detained are said to be from France and the Netherlands.
Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson confirmed their arrests and said the Prosecutor’s Office had given the suspects hefty fines, which they would have to pay to be released from police detention. Henson did not say how much their fines were.
At least seven other persons have been detained and fined over the last three months, with the last fines exceeding US $450 each.
The report stated that the Soualiga Patrol Team had cautioned the suspects on a few occasions against the illegal sale of timeshare. Their operation was considered to be illegal because the suspects reportedly were operating without the proper permission and in a manner to which authorities refer as soliciting.
The sale of timeshare is said to be permitted only in specific areas, and persons selling timeshare are not permitted to roam the streets and solicit sales from anyone, neither tourists nor residents.
