Roy: More land for
house lots possible
PHILIPSBURG/St. Maarten-All of the 184 house lots in Belvedere have potential buyers, but people interested in land can still submit their details, Housing Commissioner Roy Marlin said Wednesday.
Speaking at the Executive Council Press Briefing, Marlin said there was a possibility that more land could become available, as a local landowner had approached government with willingness to sell some of his property.
This offer will be looked into with the hope of offering more lots, the commissioner said. However, when the lots become available the price will not be as low as the Belvedere lots that are priced between NAf. 27,000 and NAf. 80,000. The lots will be affordable, as government will not sell the lots to make a profit, he added.
All the Belvedere lots were snapped up even before the appointed sign-up days of March 27-28. Marlin said that since the announcement of the lot sale last Wednesday, there had been “a rush of phone calls” and people visiting his office to sign up for the lots. “We didn’t want to refuse anyone, so we collected their information.”
The list of people wanting lots is very long, he added. It was further lengthened when Marlin took more persons’ information on Saturday because of the demand.
People who have been assigned a lot now have to get approval from a local bank for financing. If an applicant is not successful with his/her loan, the lot will become available again and will be offered to the next person on the list, Marlin explained.
