Cellular phones must be off
when entering polling station

PHILIPSBURG--The taking of photographs inside of polling stations is not allowed in connection with Island Council elections on April 20. Cellular phones must be turned off prior to entering the polling station.

Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards who is also chairman of the Main Voting Bureau, in a press release issued, appeals to the general public to adhere to all announced guidelines so that the elections may be conducted in a worthy manner. With the preparation of the polling stations, particular attention will be paid to their accessibility to persons with difficulties such as walking.

Attention will also be paid to persons in wheelchairs, so that they too may enter the polling stations without difficulty. Article 74 of the voting regulation Island Council St. Maarten mentions that a voter with a physical impairment may allow himself to be assisted.

It remains the prerogative of polling station officials to determine if that person really requires assistance. In such a case, the polling station officials may allow the person accompanying the voter in question, to assist that person with casting his or her vote.

In the event that the voter in question did not bring along anyone to help him or her, a member of the polling station may, upon request of the voter, assist that person. It’s not allowed to exercise any influence on the voting choice being made by the voter. Any help granted may only be in the form of technical assistance enabling the voter to cast his or her vote.
