Carnival Queens
BUSH ROAD--Aisha Mathew was crowned 2007 Teen Carnival Queen and Shanyra Richardson was crowned 2007 Senior Carnival Queen at Celebration Palace on Bush Road on Sunday night.
The first runner-up in the Teen Pageant was Sharity Schotel and second runner-up was Elaine Ogando Garcia. First runner-up in the Senior Pageant was Michellee Pavis and second runner-up was Natalie Richinsin.
For the teen segment Miss Amity was awarded to Teen Carnival Queen Mathew, who also won Miss Photogenic, Best Talent, Best Performance in Evening Wear and Best Interview.
The designer of her evening wear Sheila Sorton received the Best Evening Wear Design award. Mathew’s silk green and brown gown titled “Caterpillar Princess” was decked with ruffles and glittering beads.
Mathew’s talent act was a self-written skit focussing on the results of and solutions for gang violence amongst today’s youngsters. One of her props was a real coffin.
Schotel received the Best Costume sash for her red and gold costume titled “Bolivian Flair.” Her costume designer Alberto Brookes was awarded the Best Costume Design.
In the senior pageant Miss Amity was awarded to Michellee Pavis. Miss Photogenic was awarded to Natalie Richinsin. The 2007 Senior Carnival Queen Richardson won Best Costume, Best Performance in Swim Wear, Best Talent, Best Performance in Evening Wear and Best Interview.
Richardson’s winning talent was a combination of a drama act and calypso presentation focussing on matters pertaining to St. Maarten’s youngsters.
Her costume designer Alberto Brookes was awarded Best Costume Design for her costume titled “Royalty.” However, Best Evening Wear Design was awarded to D’Angelo, designer of Pavis’ baby blue satin gown titled “Celebrating Life.” It was decorated with lace and a relatively long train.
The results of the well-attended event were accepted well, based on the reactions of the audience. MC for the pageants was radio personality Gee-Money.
