Airport institutes
contingency plan

~ Air traffic controllers take action, operations not disrupted ~
AIRPORT--Although its operations have not been affected, the Princess Juliana International Airport operating company PJIAE instituted its contingency plan at Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) Thursday to limit the effects that any industrial action might have on airport operations.

The company’s decision was taken in view of what it said were events of Thursday morning that seemed to indicate that some of its employees represented by United Federation of the Windward Antilles UFA had “decided to start and resorted to taking actions.”

A press release signed by PJIAE President Eugene Holiday said the contingency plan was intended to limit the effects of the workers’ action on airport operations and to ensure and maintain “the highest levels of safety and security at the airport.”

Holiday said the actions had been concentrated among the air traffic controllers up to 6:00pm yesterday and the company anticipated that some adjustments in staffing levels would be necessary and that some flights would be delayed during this period.

Holiday continued: “We have informed the airlines and other users of the airport of this situation. Specifically, the airlines have been informed that in terms of air traffic control services our radar services are temporarily unavailable and that procedural control services will continue as normal.”

“We wish to inform the public at large that we are doing everything possible to restore normal operations and apologise to the travelling public for any inconveniences these developments may cause,” he said.
